Specialised Felling
Felling trees safely is no joke. Any tree in a dangerous or tricky spot, in or near sensitive areas, leaning dangerously or becoming dangerous because of a structural defect requires a specialist.
Thinning and Daylighting
Whether it’s a little more daylight filtering through to the lounge or garden beneath or simply giving more room for the Tui and friends to fly through unhindered. Thinning/ daylighting your tree can offer these benefits while giving less bulk and weight in branches reducing risk of wind damage.
Reductions
In many cases it is possible to reclaim a view or eliminate risk to property without having to take down the entire tree. Reducing a tree can offer a second chance for your tree to regrow and over time be shaped into a more manageable specimen.
Formative Pruning
Creating balance and form in trees is beneficial for the structure and fruiting habits of your tree, not to mention the aesthetic benefits. Formative pruning can achieve this with the help of an artist carrying sharp tools.
Mulching
Compact enough to fit into most backyards, our Vermeer chipper can make short work of your debris, while providing you with excellent mulch to keep weeds down and retain moisture in your garden.

CLIMBING ARBORISTS
Climbing and working with trees both great and small, no matter whether it is pruning a great oak, removing dangerous Eucalypts or picking plums, the climbing arborist can do it all and in the most difficult of locations….including rescuing your cat.
More than 80% of our climbing is done using single rope technique (SRT). This makes it very efficient for accessing and climbing large trees.

Pruning
Roses or Redwoods, Oaks and Oranges, pruning trees both great and small is a practice that can complement any garden and urban landscape when it is done well….and here at The Specialist we do it well.
Hedge trimming
Done two or three times a year, hedge trimming is a great way to help keep your garden landscape looking great. We have specialist equipment and qualified professionals that can get the job done safely.
Planting
This is another skill that comes hand in hand for our team. We are not limited to pruning secateurs or chainsaws, planting trees and plants is also something we are passionate about. From waterway restoration to backyard makeovers and landscape planting.

We are a whanau-owned business who specialise in arboricultural tree work. Our team of qualified, professional arborists service the Bay of Plenty region.
Thomas (the main man) has been working as a climbing arborist for the past 12 years. Prior to this he worked in the Forestry industry. There isn’t much he hasn’t done, from pruning, planting and thinning, to data collection. From running his own crews to being a trainer and mentor for young men beginning their working career in Silviculture.
We now employ a young keen young woman, who has a thirst to learn and relishes the challenge that arborist work provides. Our company’s values are strong and our work environment embraces a healthy lifestyle, simple and real.
Key projects to date:
The Specialist Ltd has played a major role in the construction of the Redwoods Treewalk. Our team was involved from the start. We prepared the trees, assisted the installation of bridges and slings and continue to help maintain the Treewalk and care for the trees.
It was great to be a part of projects at Skyline Rotorua, on Mount Ngongotaha. These include helping to prepare for the Crankworx event, as well as the continued care and hazard management of the forest.

Thomas (Thomas Rika)
Introducing Thomas:
Born in Te Kuiti and brought up in Rotorua of Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Maniapoto, Te Whanau a Apanui, Ngati Kahungunu descent, Thomas has been in and around trees ALL his life. Thomas is the owner and operator of ‘The Specialist Ltd’ and has been specialising in tree work for the past 12 years. He has a wealth of experience working with trees from a young age.
When Thomas isn’t working you will find him at home with family, or on the water paddling his waka. He enjoys mountain biking and running, keeping himself fit and active.

The 47-year old monster maple tree in our backyard was a thing of beauty, but in stormy weather a nightmare waiting to happen. It’s large heavy limbs hung over our bedroom, garden shed, and the homes of both neighbours. With those risks in mind we reluctantly arrived at the opinion it had to go, but it’s size and proximity to buildings presented a challenge beyond the average contractor, let alone a home handyman.
Thanks to The Specialist - Thomas Rika, Chauncy and Corey, we and the two neighbours, will sleep better in the next storm. They carefully dismantled the tree, mulched and removed all unwanted wood and cut the remainder to firewood size for neighbours to remove for free. We have a large garden with trees that range from large (huge!) magnolia and rhododendron to smaller fruit trees. Annually we employ Thomas Rika and his team of fit, capable and increasingly experienced young men to cut and prune these for us.
Initially we walk around the section together discuss what is important to the health or productivity of a given tree, what we want done for the “ look of the garden” etc and generate a plan which they then carry out.
